Built by the Knights of St. John, the city is a maze of medieval streets full of charm and still occupied by the locals. There are artisan workshops selling local leather goods and souvenirs as well as all sorts of tavernas and cafes. It’s well worth an overnight stay if you have the time.
Outside the old city there are numerous castles at Lindos, Monolithos, Haraki, Asklipio and elsewhere. The monastery at Tsambika has spectacular panoramic views and at Kamiros there’s an entire ancient ruined city to ponder over.
There are many beautiful old churches, such as the one at Siana with it’s ancient paintings and icons. The church at Asklipio has a folk museum and it’s well worth the climb up to the tiny chapel at Monolithos, perched up high on a rock overlooking the sea. And because this is Greece, there’s always a taverna near by where you can get a cold drink and some lunch.
Here are some pictures of the many places you can visit including Rhodes Town, the tiny church on top of the rocky outcrop at Monolithos, the Acropolis and white village at Lindos, the Ancient Church and Museum at Asklipio and the beautiful Greek Orthodox church at Siana.
